knowledge workers wastes $6 million to $12 million per year "searching
for nonexistent information, failing to find existing information, or
recreating information that can't be found." In addition, it is
estimated that knowledge workers spend 15% to 30% of their work time
looking for information.

Building a Foundation
So I decided to build a deck over the
weekend in front of our house that extends our porch. My wife and I
talked about of it for a couple of months and I dragged my feet
every weekend because I knew it was going to be challenging. At any
rate, I'm glad I pulled the trigger and got the project going. I can
see the benefits of when I'm done and now that I've started, there
is no turning back.
So as I was pounding nails and building
this thing, I couldn't help but think about the conversations I've
have over the last 2 months about DMS and EMR projects. Firms want
to build on these project, however it seems people are paralyzed and
cannot move because of the daunting tasks that lie in front of them.
I would like to encourage you that the necessity is there and
you can pay for it now or really pay for it later.
Especially my EMR discussions. This is
not the 90's anymore where the thinking process is that we still
have time. We are approaching 2010 and the hammer is coming. It is a
requirement that a meaningful EMR system is in place at your office
by 2014. My DMS discussions, well there is no government mandate,
however, with the information overload that is happening now,
(email, paper, IM's, Tweets, etc), rest assured if your not moving
in that direction, you will get run over.
